Our Story
Wayne and I first met 25 years ago when we were both teaching Art at the University of Maine. We found common ground in our love of traditional craft materials and a belief that the conscientious making we engage in should be rooted in reciprocity with and respect for the environment.
Works to Be Lived With
The overabundance of mass-produced products made without concern for the environment or workers presents challenges for those of us who love to make and collect beautiful things. We decided to approach this dilemma by founding Phyla Artisans to help present and sell our uniquely beautiful, hand-crafted objects made from sustainably sourced material using responsible processes. We make each of our works of art to be lived with. Whether it is a hand carved spoon, a wall piece or light, we hope that you will take the time to run your hands over the surfaces, feel the undulations of the carved wood, the texture of a hard-shelled gourd or a deeply etched piece of copper.
Collaborating with Nature
We view our process as a collaboration with the plants, trees and other materials that we work with; it keeps us grounded in our natural environment. There is connection in this kind of engagement, both with each other and with the materials and the wonders of our planet.
