Coppice 1
Ash coppice cleaned and carved.
Dimensions variable roughly 27” x 9” x 6”
Coppicing is a traditional method of cutting down a tree and leaving the stump to grow new shoots. Several hardwood species, including ash and maple, readily develop this new growth. This practice was common, particularly in Britain, to encourage more rapid regrowth for firewood and charcoal. Coppicing can help increase the biodiversity of a woodlot.
The sprouts grow around the residual stump at intriguing angles. We harvest trees from our wood lots that have particularly beautiful and complex forms. After curing for a year or more we enhance and finish the pieces in the studio.
